The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the court of King Peleus and his perfect son Achilles. By all rights their paths should never cross, but Achilles takes the shamed prince as his friend, and as they grow into young men skilled in the arts of war and medicine their bond blossoms into something deeper - despite the displeasure of Achilles mother Thetis, a cruel sea goddess. But then word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped. Torn between love and fear for his friend, Patroclus journeys with Achilles to Troy, little knowing that the years that follow will test everything they hold dear.

Profoundly moving and breathtakingly original, this rendering of the epic Trojan War is a dazzling feat of the imagination, a devastating love story, and an almighty battle between gods and kings, peace and glory, immortal fame and the human heart.

Scholars Respond to Racist Backlash against Black Achilles, Part 2: What did Achilles look like?

Pharos documented that criticism here and here , and the first part of our response addressed ancient Greek attitudes toward Africans. Racist commentators accuse the miniseries of erasing the white racial identity of Achilles by casting a black man to play him. As evidence for this racial identity, they claim that the Homeric epics describe Achilles as having blonde hair. Davies, Malcolm. The Aethiopis: Neo-Neoanalysis Reanalyzed.

So there is this controversy about a black guy playing Achilles in some new show. Which made me wonder Can we say how Achilles really looked? From what I remember there is a description of his hair in Iliad. With the preface that I think it's silly upset about mythological accuracy in a TV show: since the Olympic gods neglected to photograph their human pets, we can't really know what Achilles looks like.

He was the son of the Nereid Thetis and Peleus , king of Phthia. Achilles' most notable feat during the Trojan War was the slaying of the Trojan prince Hector outside the gates of Troy. Although the death of Achilles is not presented in the Iliad , other sources concur that he was killed near the end of the Trojan War by Paris , who shot him in the heel with an arrow. Later legends beginning with Statius ' unfinished epic Achilleid , written in the 1st century AD state that Achilles was invulnerable in all of his body except for his heel because, when his mother Thetis dipped him in the river Styx as an infant, she held him by one of his heels. Alluding to these legends, the term " Achilles' heel " has come to mean a point of weakness, especially in someone or something with an otherwise strong constitution. The Achilles tendon is also named after him due to these legends.

Achilles , in Greek mythology , son of the mortal Peleus , king of the Myrmidons , and the Nereid , or sea nymph , Thetis. Achilles was the bravest, handsomest, and greatest warrior of the army of Agamemnon in the Trojan War. According to Homer , Achilles was brought up by his mother at Phthia with his cousin and inseparable companion Patroclus. Hearing from the soothsayer Calchas that Troy could not be taken without Achilles, the Greeks searched for and found him. During the first nine years of the war, Achilles ravaged the country around Troy and took 12 cities. In the 10th year a quarrel with Agamemnon occurred when Achilles insisted that Agamemnon restore Chryseis, his prize of war, to her father, a priest of Apollo , so as to appease the wrath of Apollo, who had decimated the camp with a pestilence.

  1. According to Homer, Achilles was the most handsome and bravest of the Achaeans who had joined the campaign against Troy. Was Hector a really cool guy and did Achilles die as depicted in the movie “Troy”? In the Iliad, Achilles has blonde hair («?????? ?? ?????.
