The TV drama, now in its fourth season, is produced by Netflix and season 1 was first screened in , with the opening episode showing teenage Mary travelling to meet her fiance Francis, dapuhin of France. The four seasons follow Mary during her time in France, on to the early years of her reign in Scotland, through her three marriages, imprisonment in England on the orders of Elizabeth I and her execution. She became queen of Scotland six days after her birth, when her father James V was killed in battle. In Mary married Francis, dauphin of France and was widowed within two years, shortly after becoming queen consort. She returned to the land of her birth in and had a brief and unhappy reign with two further husbands, Henry Stuart Lord Darnley and James Hepburn Earl of Bothwell. Mary was forced to abdicate in favour of her infant son, the future James VI and she fled to England, where she was imprisoned on the orders of her cousin Elizabeth I.

Francis's mother, Catherine de' Medici , secretly tries to prevent the marriage following Nostradamus 's confidential prediction that the marriage will lead to Francis's death.

Bash and Mary are captured; Catherine becomes even more determined to destroy Mary. Queen Catherine comes under suspicion when a plot to murder Bash goes awry.
