Fist Of Fun by Stewart LeeIf you think reading a book that is a spin - off novelty cash in book from a mediocre BBC2 comedy series on Tuesday nights at 9pm in 1995 is a good thing to do, then this is the book for you! Its full of nineties comedy references and includes full pages satirising Steve Guttenburg, Level 42 and other nineties things like Homer s The Odyssey and Jesus.
If you really want to relive the highs of 1995, you can do what I did and watch the Fist of Fun series one DVD and then read the novelty cash in book and pretend you got it for Christmas and that it is 1995.
The book makes reference to loveable Rolf Harris - before he was outed as a paedophile - and comical Gary Glitter - before he was outed as a paedophile - and Graham Rix... The nineties were a more innocent time when outing of paedophiles had yet to become a national pastime.
Anyway, if you like nostalgia and remembering things (like Peter Kay remembers things) then this is almost definitely the book for you. If you didnt watch Fist of Fun at 9pm on Tuesday nights 20 years ago, or if you remember the nineties with disdain, then Id recommend giving it a miss.

Although it does mean a few never-before-seen sketches, too. They might have underestimated the esteem in which the show is remembered by comedy fans of a certain age, who will certainly clamour for the show. The fear. Yet it does bear up remarkably well. The studio segments might be a bit rough around the edges, but that only adds to its studenty charm, and some of the sketches are a little slow to modern eyes, but the humour holds out. The dynamic between the two is particularly effective: Herring impish and enthusiastic, Lee cynical and dry.

Fist of Fun - The Teachers
So it was with some excitement that I received my copies of the DVD release of the show that came about thanks to its masterminds, Stewart Lee and Richard Herring , and the DVD production company Go Faster Stripe , who have been releasing less mainstream comedians works for a few years now. In general terms the series falls in with a group of similar shows that seemed to typified mids comedy, pre The Fast Show , with one-off sketches delivered by something approaching an ensemble cast with no particular thread and different things each week. A few of the sketches here which really work very well are Simon Quinlank the hobbies expert and the story of Pestilence of the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse taking a job as a milkman. While the series itself is, of course, the main part of this DVD set it also comes along with two and a half discs of extras exploring the work and men behind the series.
