Images in Spite of All: Four Photographs from Auschwitz by Georges Didi-Huberman

Images in Spite of All: Four Photographs from Auschwitz

Jaskot Georges Didi-Huberman. Shane B. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, ISBN: Georges Didi-Huberman's extraordinary book is simultaneously an excursus on the only four photographs known to be taken by Jews within the brutal world of Auschwitz-Birkenau and a profound meditation on the status of the image as a means of historical analysis. On the surface, the book combines two separate contributions: first, four essays written on the Auschwitz photos and included in a catalog accompanying an exhibition of photographs of the camp shown in Paris in ; and second, a longer series of chapters responding to the firestorm that erupted from this exhibition and his essay, particularly the responses from the intellectual circle around Claude Lanzmann, the famed director of Shoah. But Didi-Huberman's original essay and his response to his critics form a syncretic whole.

Images in Spite of All is devoted to four images, specifically, the only four of the one-and-a-half million surviving photographs of the Nazi camps to depict the actual process of mass killing. Smuggled out of Auschwitz by the Polish resistance, the photographs were taken under the most extreme conditions of prohibition by members of the Sonderkommando, the special squad of prisoners compelled in the face of their own impending death to undertake the manual labor of extermination. Readers must therefore go to the critical texts themselves to unravel their true motivations. But if this volume represents only half of an unfolding story, it is nevertheless one of the most significant works on the ethics of the documentary image yet published. The ethical dimensions of the latter process are unpacked with subtlety by Didi-Huberman, who refuses simple models of emotional identification.
