Allegory of the Supermarket by Stephanie Brown

Stephanie Brown offers a hint of something curiously ominous through the sly epigraph she chooses from Henry James--The amount of thought they give to their clothing, the people who are afraid of looking frivolous! But we should already have known something unsettling was about to happen from this books title, which suggests the devastating playfulness at work in these poems. One poem deals with vacationing librarians: its not so simple that were prim and went to the exotic / Though perhaps thats what the story really is. What the story really is is sometimes what it seems but with a twist; and it is sometimes so ironically envisioned you would hardly believe this was California. These poems are indeed allegorical, but this is a thoroughly modern allegory dealing with a frighteningly up-to-date set of situations.

Description

This is a continuation of the masterful guide to Steph's costumes and clothes created by our wonderful founder. Alas, your current admin is but a fashion blind fellow, so they will have to be a pale imitation. But the N52 has provided some fun looks for our favorite hero! His expressions are perfect, ranging from concerned Steph to overjoyed and relieved Steph to standard Steph stubborn fierceness. Cameron Stewart provides the art for this semi-AU appearance of Steph, and she looks a lot younger in face than she did in Pere Perez's lead-in issue in Steph's solo series. She's usually pretty determined and cheerful looking, which seems pretty solid Steph. The issue opens with Steph about to be hanged in her school uniform, white collard shirt and striped tie covered in Steph's case with a pink sweater vest, a puple pleated skirt, and black stockings which Steph has opted not to use garters with.
