The Lion and The Bird

Written and illustrated by Marianne Dubuc. When Marianne was 10 years old, she was interviewed for a TV programme in Canada. At 10 years old, being grown up seemed too far away to make that big decision, so she told them what she liked doing at the time… which was drawing! The encouraging message for the group of school children at the launch was that you can do anything and become anything you want to be. Unless you want to be a unicorn.

Thank you! Canadian artist Dubuc delivers a quiet story that knits together themes of friendship and the circle of seasons. Working in his autumn garden, Lion hears a sound. An injured bird falls to the ground as its flock flies south. In a poignant scene, the now-healed bird gestures upward. Dubuc excels at capturing emotions visually.

The Lion and the Bird public library by French Canadian graphic designer and illustrator Marianne Dubuc is one such rare gem — the tender and melodic story of a lion who finds a wounded bird in his garden one autumn day and nurses it back to flight as the two deliver one another from the soul-wrenching pain of loneliness and build a beautiful friendship, the quiet and deeply rewarding kind. She plays with scale and negative space in a courageous and uncommon way — scenes fade into opacity as time passes, Lion shrinks as Bird flies away, and three blank pages punctuate the story as brilliantly placed pauses that capture the wistfulness of waiting and longing. What emerges is an entrancing sing-song rhythm of storytelling and of emotion. As an endless winter descends upon Lion and Bird, they share a world of warmth and playful fellowship. But a bittersweet awareness lurks in the shadow of their union — Lion knows that as soon as her broken wing heals, Bird will take to the spring skies with her flock, leaving him to his lonesome life. When spring arrives, we see Bird wave farewell to Lion.

Intensely tender and bold, The Lion and the Bird by Marianne Dubuc , translated by Sarah Ardizzone is the tale of a blossoming friendship between a lion and the injured bird he discovers in his garden one autumn day. The injured bird is one of a flock migrating to warmer climes. Left behind because of a damaged wing, the bird is nursed back to health by Lion and they become firm friends as autumn turns to winter. Time, however, never stands still and as summer gives way to autumn, Lion looks to the sky. Will his friend return? Or was that glorious winter of friendship all that will ever be?
