'Leisure Seeker': Helen Mirren's Alzheimer's Road Movie
H elen Mirren and Donald Sutherland take to the road in this soppy bittersweet heart-sinker — depressing in various intentional and unintentional ways. Lovably impulsive oldsters Ella and John infuriate their uptight children played by Christian McKay and Janel Moloney by heading off in their cranky old Winnebago for a last road trip in the sunset of their lives, despite their frailties. They are cheerful, gutsy, secretly scared of the future and by imminent revelations about their shared past. John is a retired literature professor in the first stages of dementia, given to attempting animated conversations about Ernest Hemingway with baffled waitresses in various diners. For her part, Ella has to take pills for her aches and pains, and the agonies of caring for John are taking their toll. Sutherland has the marginally less thankless role as a man entering his second childhood: a snowy-haired babyface of blankness. So how naive are these old people about the ways of the modern world?

The film is based on the novel of the same name by Michael Zadoorian. Traveling in a vintage Winnebago recreational vehicle, John and Ella Spencer take one last road trip from Wellesley, Massachusetts to the Ernest Hemingway House in the Florida Keys before his dementia and her cancer can catch up with them. It is also the director's first film shot solely in English. Sutherland and Mirren had previously collaborated as a married couple in the Phillip Borsos directed China-set saga, Bethune: The Making of a Hero , and this is their first film together for 27 years. Fisherman's Hospital is located in Marathon, Florida. The website's critical consensus reads, " The Leisure Seeker certainly doesn't suffer from any shortage of acting talent, but it's largely squandered on a predictable, diffuse drama with little to say.
