Going to the Dentist by Anne CivardiAs the title suggests, this picture book is about going to the dentist. The pages detail what happens when the dentist and staff clean a childs teeth, as well as what happens when they discover a cavity. The only part that is different at our local dentist is that a cavity usually requires a separate visit. Nevertheless, I think this book would be calming for a child to read -- helping them understand the importance of going to a dentist as well as knowing the staff is friendly and concerned about the health of their teeth.

Book List: 13 books about going to the dentist
As parents, the feeling of watching your child do something for the first time is wonderful. Parenting is full of exciting firsts for you and your child. Their first bath, smile, giggle, food, tooth, steps, word. Each first is monumental. The feeling of pride is shared between parent and child, each embarking on a new journey. But sometimes new experiences and places can cause anxiety for children, like their first dental appointment. Pediatric Dental Specialists recommends your child visit us by the time they get their first tooth, or by their first birthday, whichever comes first.
Going to the dentist can be an unsettling or scary experience for preschoolers and sometimes for adults! Reading books about dentists and their helpful work can create more positive attitudes in preschoolers. These books are perfect for talking about dentists and would be great additions to your home or classroom, especially when you are talking about dental health or community helpers. A Trip to the Dentist by Penny Smith Another story of children visiting the dentist with photographs. A Day in the Life of a Dentist by Heather Adamson A nonfiction book with photographs that follows a dentist through her workday.

Paddy or Dr. A while back, we wrote a post about helping children overcome a fear of the dentist and one of our ideas was reading books about the dentist. When kids see their favorite characters enjoying a cleaning and interacting with the doctor, it takes away some of the unknowns and helps put them at ease. Mercer Mayer is such a talented author and illustrator and the Little Critter series is a favorite of Dr. In this book, Little Critter goes to the dentist for a check-up, which includes x-rays, and even has to have a cavity filled. There are quite a few stories available that help guide young kids through what they may experience when they go, from the waiting room to the exam room to a potential hopefully not! Unlike their pediatricians, who most children see regularly from birth, dentists are a new experience for little ones. Below are some of the books that my family read to prepare for the trip — and loved! Dora tells the reader about her trip to the dentist and includes them in the process, asking them to look for things in the illustrations and to do certain things open wide! She briefly touches on cavities without going into too much detail.
