K-12 Cross-Categorical Special Education
The primary responsibility of a special education teacher is to make lessons accessible to students with specialized needs. While some special education preparation programs produce teachers with narrow licensures, qualifying them to handle only specific disabilities — others provide teaching candidates with licenses that enable them to service students with a broad range of needs. Cross categorical teachers are teachers who hold this license and, as such, are qualified to educate students with varying needs. Special education teachers are specifically trained to accommodate and assist children with special needs. In cross categorical programs, candidates prepare to assist students of varying ability levels.

I am Interested in This Major. The Bachelor of Science in Education in Special Education prepares students to work with children from kindergarten through twelfth grade in public, private, and alternative school systems. MU Students work closely with mentors, practicing teachers, administrators, and university faculty to develop the knowledge and skills to enhance learning outcomes for children and youth with and at risk for disabilities. Upon successfully completing the initial teacher certification process, the state grants certification in Special Education: Cross Categorical. Practical and rewarding clinical training in schools begins sophomore year, and continues each semester culminating in a full year senior-level teaching internship, enhancing teaching skills and confidence.
The program may be completed in 45 credit hours. The DATSE is a competency-based program that is aligned to state and national standards as well as evidence- based educational practices. Being a lifelong learner has made a difference in my profession and in the outcome of my students. Candidates who are working as a paraprofessional in an approved setting must provide documentation that field requirements can be met via an agreement signed by a District Supervisor. This course surveys all areas of exceptionalities. It is designed to help the post-baccalaureate prospective teacher identify and plan instruction for children with exceptionalities.
