Poetry Is Not a Luxury by Audre Lorde

In this masterpiece, Lorde sang about poetry and feminist theory together. Which made me amazed and confused at the same time!
Yes, I have my own voice, and with it, not only I can change myself, but also I can change the world itself! I really like how I feel after I read something made by Lorde.
Lorde described the womans place of power as The womans place of power within each of us is neither white nor surface, it is dark, it is ancient, and it is deep.
Its amazing that I was agreeing with Lorde in each word she wrote, but when she said:The white fathers told us, I think therefore I am; and the black mothers in each of us-the poet-whispers in our dreams, I feel therefore I can be free. Poetry coins the language to express and charter this revolutionary awareness and demand, the implementation of that freedom. she turned up the table.
Thi powerful woman is my new idol.

BOOK REVIEW: “Poetry Is Not a Luxury”

Post a Comment. The essay was a remarkable work of poetic theory: a genre in itself. As individuals, our voice is who we are. It is also who we might become. When women use their voices, they are able to break out of the silence that they have been bullied into by racist and sexist ideologies.

I like poetry. Regardless, for a long time now, reading and writing poetry has been a meaningful part of my life. I get Poem-a-Day emails that deliver a new verse in my inbox every morning. I follow poets on Instagram. I could chalk it up to a busy winter schedule.

The quality of light by which we scrutinize our lives has direct bearing upon the product which we live, and upon the changes which we hope to bring about through those lives. This is poetry as illumination, for it is through poetry that we give name to those ideas which are, until the poem, nameless and formless-about to be birthed, but already felt.

It's just over three pages long. And perhaps because she brings her life as a poet to bear on these rather brief prose pieces the longest is a transcript of a conversation between her and Adrienne Rich , her big ideas are distilled into crystal and simply laid before us readers. Lorde doesn't waste time. There's no filler. Like so:. As they become known to and accepted by us, our feelings and the honest exploration of them become sanctuaries and spawning grounds for the most radical and daring of ideas.

In Poetry Is Not a Luxury, Audre Lorde seeks to define poetry as something vital and necessary to the human especially female condition rather than a leisure activity. To Lorde, poetry is the essence of womanhood, and the feelings poetry is so easily able to express are a direct link to ancient society. Lorde sees this ancient connection as a sort of antidote to the ills of modern life, which include an unhealthy focus on profit, linear power, and institutional dehumanization. Lorde sees poetry as a step in the formation of ideas, rather than the expression of an already formed idea. Hopes and dreams are transformed into language through poetry, which then becomes a coherent idea that can be used to catalyze action.
