Quote by Dietrich Bonhoeffer: “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God...”
Update on a Spurious Bonhoeffer Quote: Not to Speak is to Speak, Not to Act is to Act
In late August, I published an examination of a popular quote commonly but incorrectly attributed to Dietrich Bonhoeffer:. Silence in the face of evil is itself evil. God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act. The first appearance of the entire quote I can find is in a American Interfaith Institute newsletter. The newsletter reported on a museum exhibit featuring Bonhoeffer.
And they brought him unto Moses: and his mother's name was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan: …. Joshua ,17 Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the LORD, since I have shewed you kindness, that ye will also shew kindness unto my father's house, and give me a true token: …. Joshua This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them. The LORD will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name. Contemporary English Version Do not misuse my name. The LORD will make sure that anyone who carelessly uses his name will be punished.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer 4 February — 9 April was a German Lutheran pastor, theologian , participant in the German resistance movement against Nazism and founding member of the Confessing Church. Attributed to Bonhoeffer on the internet, but this is from a remark about him, not by him, in Eric Metaxas , Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy , p. Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act. Attributed to Bonhoeffer on the Internet, and supposedly from Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy by Eric Metaxas ; however, there is no actual reference in that book. However, in advertising the book Metaxas does state on his site that the quote is from Bonhoeffer.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer is a modern day hero among evangelical Christians. For many Christians who feel compelled to take a stand on principle, Bonhoeffer has become an inspiration and guiding light. On that point, perhaps the most repeated and celebrated quote attributed to Bonhoeffer is. Silence in the face of evil is itself evil. God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.
Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act. I have been haunted by this quote lately. Foremost among them is when the church acts more like a political party than the bride of Christ. I have seen many representing Christ, but caring about things that seem counter to the gospel message. I will get to these things in a moment. Confession: I have tried to publicly remain silent on anything that could remotely resemble political rhetoric.
