Letters to Juliet: Celebrating Shakespeares Greatest Heroine, the Magical City of Verona, and the Power of Love by Lise Friedman

The enduring legend of Shakespeare’s pair of star-crossed lovers draws millions of visitors to Verona, Italy, each year. But that is just part of the story. Every day, letters, frequently addressed simply, “Juliet, Verona,” arrive in the city. They come by the truckload, in almost every language imaginable, written by romantics seeking Juliet’s counsel. Most of the missives talk of love, of course —love found and love lost, love sought and love remembered. And, amazingly, not one letter goes unanswered.

Letters to Juliet tells the story of these letters and the volunteers who have been writing responses for more than seven decades —volunteers who first acted privately, and who are now sanctioned by the city of Verona as part of the Juliet Club . Featuring more than seventy-five heartfelt letters, this poetic book retraces the history behind Shakespeare’s tale and tours the monuments that have fueled the worlds enchantment with Juliet and her Romeo.

Shortly afterward, in or , a letter arrived in Verona, Italy, addressed to Juliet Capulet. For unknown reasons, the curator of Juliet's tomb wrote back, sparking a trend that would eventually spread throughout the world. Over the ensuing years so many letters continued to arrive for Juliet that the city of Verona organized the Juliet Club in , an organization with a team of eight volunteer secretaries who respond to the more than letters that are received each year.

I know the ending is preordained from the setup. I know the characters are broad and comforting stereotypes. In this case, I simply don't care. Sometimes we have personal reasons for responding to a film. He's always leaving her behind to investigate wine and truffles for his New York restaurant. She visits the house allegedly inhabited by Shakespeare's Juliet.

Some sort of subconscious symmetry I guess. Anyhoo, I really liked this movie.

  1. Directed by Gary Winick from a script by Jose Rivera and Tim Sullivan, the film fulfills every one of its ambitions with the same kind of brisk efficiency that its heroine brings to her job of magazine fact-checking.
