The Secret: A Treasure Hunt by Byron PreissHoly scheisse! It does exist! I read this book when it first came out, when it was a new book at the public library. Over the years, I began to believe that Id just mashed together the memory of a beautifully enchanting cover from a random fantasy novel seen in a supermarket or a dream, a provocatively simple title that no 8 year old could resist (secret, treasure and hunt in any order) and the contents of several faerie tale and folklore books Id read in the early 80s and, voila, a bibliophiles intoxicating Mandela Effect cocktail: the syrupy summery popsicle sweet false memory of a magical book from childhood.

Since , only two of the twelve casques have been recovered. The first was located in Grant Park, Chicago, in by a group of students. The second was unearthed in in Cleveland by two members of the Quest4Treasure forum. Preiss was killed in an auto accident in the summer of , but the hunt for his casques continues.

My mother had taken me to the little library in Bedford, outside Cleveland, and in the stacks there, I discovered this small bound book with a strange painting on the cover that hinted at some fantastic mystery. I took the book home with me and read about the twelve keys Byron Preiss had buried in cities across North America. I tried to decode the paintings and poems that held the locations of these keys.

Alternately, the pattern of curves in the waving flag may be a better match for the Matanzas River, which flows northwards to meet the Tolomato River at the city of St.
There is a treasure of sorts, a ceramic cask buried somewhere in Milwaukee. But if you solve the puzzle and dig up the cask, you will be a worldwide web legend—and probably fined by the Milwaukee County Parks Department. If the reader examined the appendix pages and figured out which of the 12 riddles paired up with a corresponding fantasy-styled painting which also contains visual clues , and then went hunting and dug up the cask, he or she was to send the ceramic key to Preiss. He would then reward the finder with a precious birthstone as seen in each painting. It has been determined with fair certainty that Painting 10 and Verse 8 match up for Milwaukee.
